Sword in the Stars by Wayne Thomas Batson

From the Publisher:
Centuries have passed since the Silence, and the few remaining faithful cling to the ancient prophecies of the First One. They wait for the Caller and watch the skies for the Sword in the Stars, even as the world they’ve always known unravels around them.

Murderous Gorracks have secretly penetrated the kingdom’s borders. Their attacks grow more brazen…more horrific, threatening to touch off a war on a scale that hasn’t been seen in seven ages.

In the capital city of Anglinore, noble King Aravel ponders the advice of this twin brother Morlan: declare all out war on the Gorrack nation. While Anglinore’s High Shepherd, the wise Sebastian Grenlaff urges caution and listens to troubling voices on the wind.

Queen Mariel, due to deliver a child any day, suspects the unthinkable about her husband’s brother Morlan. She sets off alone to Morlan’s castle in Dunharrow, hoping against hope that she can keep old wounds from erupting in war.

Alastair Coldharrow, tortured by an addiction to the outlawed Witchdrale and haunted by a violent past, wagers his life on the hope that the foretold Halfainin, the Pathwalker, would come. When at last, the Sword appears in the Stars, Alastair begins a fruitless search for the Halfainin that leaves him disillusioned, broken, and lost. Used to caring only for himself, Alastair will enter a maelstrom of conflict as loyalties are tested, dark schemes are hatched, and the many realms of Myriad brace themselves for war.

Will Alastair realize what he has before its too late…for everyone?

The Errant King

The Restorer, Expanded Edition by Sharon Hinck

I have to be honest, when I read this book I was quite relieved that it wasn’t going to be another typical “love story.”  The main character, Susan Mitchell, is a soccer mom and is happily married.  I hoped that it would be full of adventure for the Lord, and I wasn’t disappointed!  Just when I began to figure things out in this new world, which is always a little tough with fantasies, Sharon Hinck threw in a twist that I didn’t see coming.  It is a great story.  And even though it is about a married women, I think teens will really enjoy it too!

Don’t forget to check out the second and third book of this series, “The Sword of Lyric”: The Restorer’s Son, and The Restorer’s Journey.

Restorer by Sharon Hinck

Pursued by his calling, Kieran finds a boy without a home, a king with burning questions, and a nation torn by darkness. As he embraces the tasks the One has set before him, this new Restorer learns that the One requires his all—perhaps even his life.   This Carol Award-winning novel is now in a new edition that includes a devotion guide, bonus scenes, and other great extras to immerse the reader in the world on the other side of the portal.

A Cry From Egypt by Hope Auer

Finally!  A wonderful fiction about Egypt that is perfect for children to read as they study Egypt.  Hope Auer skillfully points to Yahweh–God the Father–as she writes about a family under slavery in Egypt.  She is a young author with more books to come in the series, “The Promised Land.”  We look forward to reading her next one!

A Cry From Egypt by Hope Auer

From the Author’s Website:

“Girls, get back!” Ezra shouted.

His face was pale, but his eyes kindled with indignation as he stood in front of the girls protectively. Ezra dropped the pitchers in the sand and his hand dashed to a dagger, concealed under his tunic. Jarah’s eyes grew wide. He could be killed for carrying a dagger!

Jarah was a slave in Egypt. It was a dangerous place to be. Her work was exhausting and her family was torn between the gods of the Egyptians and the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. And her brother… would his Ada be given in marriage to an Egyptian in the palace? Would they ever be free?

Adventure, excitement, love, and faith come together when Jarah and her family find themselves at the culmination of four hundred years of history.

Have you ever wondered what life was like in ancient Egypt? As an Israelite? And a slave? Want your children to understand the Bible is history?

“I seriously have no words that can properly explain everything awesome about this book.” – Dawn Winters from Guiding Light Homeschool

“After reading the first chapter with the children, I snuck off to read more. I stayed up late to finish it. That’s how drawn into Jarah’s world I was.” – Linda B at Homeschooling 6

“I have worked as a writing teacher and editor for for my entire adult life. I have read more stories from young authors than I can count, but Hope’s work is the first to make me think of JRR Tolkien, CS Lewis, and Frank Perretti when I read it. ” – Patsy Brekke on Mrs B’s Bonnet at WritingFoundations.com

“One of the things I enjoyed most about this book as a parent was that Hope did an excellent job of focusing on her story, while staying true to the Biblical account of the plagues in Egypt. She allowed the Bible to speak for itself with the details she presented, neither adding nor subtracting from it.” – Michele P from Family, Faith, and Fridays

By Darkness Hid by Jill Williamson, Book 1

This fantasy is very well thought out.  I wasn’t sure at the beginning what this “bloodvoicing” was–and as you will see, it’s being able to talk with others in your thoughts.  And that brings out some great “hidden” conversations.   Even though Jill writes for teens, adults will enjoy this book also!

By Darkness Hid by Jill Williamson

From the Publisher: Winner of the 2010 Christy Award for the Visionary Category!   Jill Williamson’s By Darkness Hid bursts onto the scene with a “highly recommended” review from the prestigious Library Journal magazine.   In this fantasy novel, young Achan Cham dreams of serving in the Kingsguard Knights, but he is a stray–worse than a slave–and such aspirations are out of his reach. Worse, Achan is beginning to hear strange voices in his head, and wondering why his masters force him to drink a tonic every day, though he is not sick.   Half the land of Er’Rets is permanently shrouded in Darkness. Forces on both sides of the Evenwall want Vrell and Achan, and their powerful gifts.

This is a terrific fantasy adventure with romance, betrayal, cruelty, and unexpected hope. Because above all the other voices in Achan’s head, he hears a new one calling him to faith.   By Darkness Hid is book 1 in the Blood of Kings series.
