Book 2 of the Addie McCormick Adventures is out! We love these adventure books for both boys and girls. We know you will love them too.
The Secret in the Scrapbook by Leanne Lucas
Addie and Nick thought they had learned not to meddle in other people’s affairs. But when they meet Amy, Miss T’s live-in companion, their curiosity is peaked.
Was Amy’s father really a spy during WWII?
Why doesn’t Amy want them to see what is in her scrapbook?
Brian, Nick’s old friend, joins Addie and Nick as they seek to uncover a fifty-year old secret. But after the scrapbook is stolen, there seems no way to solve the mystery. They have to depend on the Lord to help them and have faith that He will guide them.
Leanne Lucas grew up in Central Illinois reading mysteries and exploring the countryside around her family home. She uses those memories in her stories and often names characters after people she knows and loves. Leanne now lives in Homer, Illinois with her husband, Dave. They have one grown son, Joshua.
I read this book when it was first published in 1994. A friend gave it to me. I didn’t even know who Randy Alcorn was at that time. I really was impressed with the way he drew you into the mystery and at the same time gave you a thought-provoking insight into what heaven might be like. Since then, I heard about him from his book called Heaven. I picked up this book, Deadline, to reread it several years ago, and discovered it was by Randy Alcorn. I didn’t know until last year that he had written two more in the series, Dominion and Deception (my all-time favorite). This book focuses on the issues of liberalism (abortion, tolerance, man’s truth versus God’s truth) and the lies that it brings which can cause great pain and heartache to those who believe them. I highly recommend this book!
Deadline by Randy Alcorn
From the Publisher:
Heart-Pounding Murder Mystery
Involved in a tragic accident under suspicious circumstances, award-winning journalist Jake Woods teams with detective Ollie Chandler to uncover the truth. This alluring repackage of the R andy Alcorn bestseller finds Jake drawing upon all his resources in an ever-intensifying, dangerous murder investigation. Unaware of the imminent threat to his own life, Jake struggles for answers to the mystery at hand and is plunged into a deeper search for the meaning of his own existence.
His Body Hung Suspended Between Two Friends–His Soul Between Two Worlds
“Doc’s shoulder jammed into Jake as he swerved the Suburban sharply to the right, cut between a telephone pole and a billboard, then careened into a ten-foot high embankment. Sometime between the sound of Doc’s last cry and the sickening crunch of bent metal from the car’s first roll, Jake lost consciousness. The last sensation he felt was that of being crushed between the two men he had known since childhood… ”
When tragedy strikes those closest to him, award-winning journalist Jake Woods must draw upon all his resources to uncover the truth about their suspicious accident. Soon he finds himself swept up in a murder investigation that is both complex and dangerous. Unaware of the threat to his own life, Jake is drawn in deeper and deeper as he desperately searches for the answers to the immediate mystery at hand and—ultimately—the deeper meaning of his own existence.
Deadline is a dramatic and vivid novel of substance, filled with hope and perspective for every reader who longs to feel purpose in life.
In this second book of his series, Randy Alcorn focuses on gang violence, and racism. In the midst of enjoying a good mystery, I learned so much about a life that I have very little experience, and about an afterlife with the Lord that is very thought-provoking. Just so you know, this book is very thick, so if you like a full read, this is the one for you. You may want to first read Deadline, the first of the series. And then you will have to get Deception–my favorite in the series, although they all are great!
Dominion by Randy Alcorn
From the publisher:
When two senseless killings hit close to home, columnist Clarence Abernathy seeks revenge for the murders—and, ultimately, answers to his own struggles regarding race and faith. After being dragged into the world of inner-city gangs and racial conflict, Clarence is encouraged by fellow columnist Jake Woods to forge an unlikely partnership with a redneck homicide detective. Soon the two find themselves facing dark forces, while unseen eyes watch from above. This re-release of Randy Alcorn’s powerful bestseller spins off from Deadline and offers a fascinating glimpse inside heaven.
Can One Man’s Search for Justice Stand Up to the Forces of Evil Threatening to Destroy Him?
A shocking murder drags black newspaper columnist Clarence Abernathy into the disorienting world of inner-city gangs and racial conflict. In a desperate hunt for answers to the violence (and to his own struggles with race and faith), Clarence forges an unlikely partnership with redneck detective Ollie Chandler. Despite their differences, Clarence and Ollie soon find themselves sharing the same mission: victory over the forces of darkness vying for dominion.
Filled with insight—and with characters so real you’ll never forget them—Dominion is a dramatic story of spiritual searching, racial reconciliation, and hope.
I don’t know when I have read a novel that affected me so profoundly. Randy Alcorn has combined a superb mystery/detective story with a lesson in racial relations in America, gang dynamics and symbols, Christian values, and spiritual warfare.
I’m wondering if this is my all time favorite mystery! Ollie Chandler, the police man in this book, reminds me a bit of Colombo, but with oh so much more character! I absolutely loved this mystery. And Randy Alcorn does a great job of weaving everything together so secretly that it made me nuts to try to figure it out. I highly recommend this. You might want to read the series in order because some of the same people are in all three books–Deadline first, Dominion, and then Deception. (However, I read Deadline, Deception, and then Dominion–I came out okay).
Deception by Randy Alcorn
From the Publisher:
“Messin’ with me’s like wearin’ cheese underwear down rat alley.”
Homicide detective Ollie Chandler has seen it all. Done more than he cares to admit. But when he’s called to investigate the murder of a Portland State University professor, he finds himself going places he’s never gone before.
Places he never wanted to go.
Because all the evidence is pointing to one horrific conclusion: The murderer is someone in his own department. That’s not the worst of it, though. Ollie has nagging doubts…about himself. Where was he during the time of the murder?
Joined by journalist Clarence Abernathy and their friend Jake Woods, Ollie pushes the investigation forward. Soon all three are drawn deep into corruption and political tensions that threaten to destroy them–and anyone who tries to help. But they’re in too deep to quit. They’ve got no choice. They have to follow the evidence to the truth…
No matter how ugly–or dangerous–it gets.
A gripping story of murder and spiritual struggle, Deception proves, as never before, the truth of Ollie’s first law: “Things are often not what they appear.”
From the Hardcover edition.
“I have just finished reading Randy Alcorn’s new novel. Deception is the same high quality as Randy’s related novels Deadline and Dominion. All three are page-turners…Randy is a gifted writer. I strongly recommend that you read his books.”
– Chuck Norris, six-time World Karate champion, international film and television star
“Deception was as engaging to me as books by Chricton or Clancy…I’m sure glad Randy can’t paint, or I’d be in big trouble!”
– Ron DiCianni, award-winning artist, author of Beyond Words
“Randy Alcorn is amazing. He’s one of my all-time favorite authors.”
– Karen Kingsbury, bestselling author of the Redemption series and the Firstborn series
“Alcorn has written a novel that combines the suspense of John Grisham and the theological pondering of C.S. Lewis.”
– New Man Magazine for Deadline
“[Deadline] is for clear thinkers who enjoy a good argument. There can be no mistaking — and there should be no ignoring — the vital message of this book.”
– Frank Peretti, bestselling author of This Present Darkness
“Randy Alcorn has hit it out of the park. Deadline is riveting. Motivating. Intriguing. Provocative. And it’s for the mystery lovers too. Many books feed the mind. Some feed the heart. Deadline nourishes both.”
– Stu Weber, author of Tender Warrior
“Alcorn’s writing remains top-notch, and he fills the pages with enough tension to cause ulcers.”
Most of us may have watched the movie, Courageous, which I loved! So when I read the book, I thought that it would just be the same as the movie. And the first chapter or so was similar, and then I read on, and there was this meeting at the county fair with a guy in a backpack. Who was that? And then there was a police detective that I didn’t know. Who was that? And then, there was a mystery that I couldn’t figure out. And if you want to know what that is, then you will just have to buy this book! It was great fun to read!

When tragedy hits home, these men are left wrestling with their hopes, their fears, their faith, and their fathering. Can a newfound urgency help these dads draw closer to God . . . and to their children?
I first read Deadline in the 90’s. I loved the book. I didn’t even know who Randy Alcorn was at that time. I just thought that the author’s depiction of heaven was very thought provoking. And I loved a good mystery. Then last year, I picked up the book from my shelf and realized it was written by Randy Alcorn, who most people have now heard of. Then I saw that he had written other books, such as Deception, Dominion, Safely Home, and Courageous. I haven’t found any bad language in his books, but they do deal with some difficult subjects such as abortion, racism, gang violence, and persecution. I have really grown in my understanding of these sinful areas in our lives, and how deceived we can be by the things of this world. I highly recommend these books.

Smugglers in Hong Kong, Book 1 by Anthony Bollback
Pirates! Smugglers! Adventure!
That’s what Jack and Jenny Carlton, twelve-year old twins, hope to find as they go with their parents on a business trip to Hong Kong. Their new-found Chinese friends, Tim and Ruth Chen, share the twins’ quest for adventure, but it seems unlikely they would meet any smugglers. But God has other plans. Before long both families become involved with the capture of a smuggling operation. The excitement of an actual encounter with smugglers helps strengthen the Carltons’ strong beliefs in God and His loving care in their lives.
The combination of an intriguing mystery and the strong Christian life is skillfully interwoven by Anthony Bollback. He has been telling his children and grandchildren stories with a purpose for many years. Powerful Christian truths which change people’s lives have always been communicated through stories. It is the way Jesus taught people. This book is the first of the Jack and Jenny Series which is designed to teach great spiritual truths in a simple and exciting way for children to grasp.
Mystery of the Counterfeit Money, Book 3 by Anthony Bollback
An envelope with $2000! Where did it come from?
Jack and Jenny Carlton are on their way to Hong Kong again in this third Jack and Jenny Mystery. As they make plans to share Chinese New Year with their friends, Ruth and Tim Chen, Jack says, “…we don’t go looking for robbers and smugglers. They are just there, and we hap¬pen to get involved. Honest, we don’t even try to find them!” and the twins assure their parents this will just be a friendly visit with the Chens.
Although they promise to avoid trouble, their parents know better. It seems trouble gravitates to the twins like flies to honey. That is just what happens when an accidental discovery lands them in the middle of a “Mystery of the Counterfeit Money.”
Anthony Bollback’s talent for weaving a tale of intrigue captures young readers’ imaginations from the very beginning and makes this one of his most exciting mysteries. As in the first two mysteries, he skillfully includes the Carltons’ strong Christian beliefs and witness for God right alongside the exciting exploits of the twins, which leads to a very important decision in this third book.
Recommended for Readers 8-12
Rescue at Cripple Creek, Book 4 by Anthony Bollback
The inside of the old abandoned mine was dark and dangerous. How would they escape?

During the Chens’ first visit to the United States, the children share a thrilling adventure in the mountains of Colorado. Every day brings new excitement as they explore an old mining town, take horseback excursions and encounter a cantankerous old hermit who lives on the mountain with a vicious dog.
The twins’ natural curiosity and boldness eventually involve them in a dramatic rescue, an encounter with escaped convicts and an opportunity to share their Christian faith with a new-found friend.
Anthony Bollback skillfully guides young readers through one adventure after another at a pace designed to hold their interest. Throughout the book, the Carltons’ Christian faith and their unwavering trust in God plays an integral part in the story.
